
Fairfield Harriers Take Ninth at MAAC Championships

BRONX, N.Y. - The Fairfield men's and women's cross country teams each placed ninth at the 2007 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships held at this afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park.
Freshman Ben Heslin (Kensington, Conn.) had a solid afternoon for the men crossing the line in a time of 28:03.1 to finish 45th overall in the 8K event. He was followed by sophomore Kevin Manke (Ridgewood, N.J.), who posted a time of 29:46.8. In their final MAAC Championship, seniors Duncan Gerity (Glastonbury, Conn.) and A.J. Lawrence (Warwick, N.Y.) finished back-to-back as Gerity clocked a 29:50.2 while Lawrence posted a 30:07.6. Closing out the top-five was freshman Thomas Fitzpatrick (Westfield, N.J.) with a time of 30:09.6.
Also competing for the Stags were freshmen Jeff Paul (Schenectady, N.Y.) and Khalid Zeidan (Fairfield, Conn.). Paul clocked a time of 31:23.7 while Zeidan ran a 32:49.0.
On the women's side, sophomore Caroline Conant (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) was the top-finisher for the Stags, clocking a mark of 26:12.9. In her first MAAC Championship, freshman Laura Daniels (Ramsey, N.J.) finished with a time of 26:42.6. Junior Devann Ard (Watchung, N.J) was third with a time of 26:44.6 followed by sophomore Cara Feeney (Woburn, Mass.), who posted a time of 26:55.6. Rounding out the top-five was freshman Annie Rooney (Avon, N.J.) with a time of 27:06.0.
Also competing was sophomore Eileen Smith (Little Neck, N.Y.), who recorded a time of 27:39.7. Sophomore Ashley Doran (Brick, N.J.) had a time of 28:05.3 while junior Jen Booton (Tinton Falls, N.J.) notched a time of 28:53.4.
Iona successfully defended its crowns in each race taking both team and individual titles. Mohamed Khadraoui captured the individual men's crown for the nationally-ranked Gaels with a time of 25:10.9 while McKayla Plank was the top woman to cross the line with a mark of 21:34.6.
Doran, Smith, Manke and Gerity were all named to the MAAC All-Academic Team.
Fairfield heads to Franklin Park in Boston for the NCAA Northeast Regionals on November 10 and then returns to Van Cortlandt Park on November 17 when it competes at the ECAC/IC4A Cross Country Championships.
