Cross Country Announces Newcomers For Fall 2009

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University men's and women's cross country head coach John Sagnelli announced his incoming student-athletes for the 2009 season. Eight of the nine newcomers signed National Letters of Intent while the ninth is a transfer student.

On the men's side, Kyle Short (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Dylan Fisher (Peterborough, N.H.), Matt Boley (South Brunswick, N.J.), Greg Chase (Bristol, Conn.), and Ernie Lustenring (Massapequa, N.Y.) comprise the Class of 2013 while Jon Juleus (Succasunna, N.J.) transfers to Fairfield for his sophomore campaign.

On the women's side, Kerry Hamilton (West Islip, N.Y.), Samantha Goodnow (Deerfield, N.H.), and Elizabeth Butrick (Torrington, Conn.) will comprise the Class of 2013.

"I am very pleased to welcome these nine talented student-athletes to Fairfield in the fall," Sagnelli said. "They'll add balance and depth to our program and I look forward to watching them develop during their careers."

Short was a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track at Cactus Shadows High School. Short, a four-time All-Conference selection, helped the Falcons to a second place finish at the Arizona State Championships in 2008 while finishing second individually. His personal best in the 5K is 16:06.00 and runs a 4:24 mile, a 1:59 800m, and a 9:37 3200.

Fisher was a four-time state qualifier and scorer in both cross country and track at Contoocook Valley (ConVal) Regional High School. Fisher was the runner-up at the 2009 New Hampshire State Open and finished 15th at the New England Championships. His personal best 5K time is 15:54 and he runs a 9:48 in the 3200m.

Juleus spent his freshman campaign at the University at Albany, posting his fastest time of the year at the IC4A Championships. In high school, he lettered in both cross country and track at Pope John XXIII, helping the team to 11 conference championships. He was a five-time All-County selection and earned All-State honors in both cross country and track. His personal best in the 8K is 26:10 and his personal best in the 5K is 16:08. He runs a 4:16 mile, a 1:53 800m, and an 8:45 3000m.

Chase was a state qualifier and a seven-time All-Conference selection in both cross country and track at Bristol Eastern. He notched a personal best in the 5K with a time of 16:40 and runs a 9:55 in the 3200m.

Boley was an All-Conference selection and a state qualifier in both cross country and track at South Brunswick High School. He posts a 5K of 16:38 and a 9:50 in the 3200m.

Lustenring was a state qualifier and All-Conference selection at Holy Trinity High School in Long Island. He runs a 17:00 5K, a 13:40 4K and a 4:29 mile.

Hamilton was a four-time state qualifier in both cross country and track at St. John the Baptist High School in Long Island. She was also a three-time All-Conference selection. Hamilton's personal best in the 5K is 19:15 and her personal best in the 4K is 15:40. She also runs a 10:50 in the 3000m.

Goodnow qualified for the state championships in three out of her four years at Trinity High School in New Hampshire. A former team captain, she notched a personal best of 19:50 in the 5K.

Butrick was a three-time All-Conference pick in both cross country and track at Torrington High School. She runs a time of 20:00 in the 5K.

Both the Fairfield men's and women's teams placed seventh at the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships held at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida.
