
Men's Cross Country Places Fifth, Women Take Sixth at MAAC Championships

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University men's cross country team took fifth while the women's team placed sixth at the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park this afternoon. Junior Benjamin Heslin (Kensington, Conn.) paced the men, finishing 16th overall while sophomore Lauren Londregan (Mystic, Conn.) finished 21st overall for the women.
The men's team moved up two spots from last year's MAAC Championships, while the women's team moved up one spot. Iona repeated as champions on both the men's and women's side.
Heslin traversed the men's 8K course in a time of 27:06.3, recording the tenth-fastest time by a Fairfield runner at Van Cortlandt in program history. Londregan finished the women's 6K with a personal best of 24.47.2.
Sophomore Nikki Livesey (Livingston, N.J.) was the second Stag to cross the line for the women, finishing in 24:54.4 which was good for 25th overall. Sophomore Kristen Golen (Malvern, Pa.) was third with a time of 25:19.4 while classmate Emily Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) finished in 25:34.3. Sophomore Lauren Tehan (Portland, Ore.) rounded out the top-five with a time of 25:59.8.
Running in his first MAAC Championship, sophomore transfer Jon Juleus (Succasunna, N.J.) was the second Stag across the line with a time of 27:24.3, good for 23rd overall. Freshman Dylan Fisher (Peterborough, N.H.) finished in 28:07.7 while sophomore Steve Flanagan (Ramsey, N.J) had a time of 28:22.8. Freshman Matt Boley (Kendall Park, N.J.) rounded out the top-five with a time of 28:25.6.
Boley was followed closely behind by freshman Greg Chase (Bristol, Conn.) who finished in 28:27.6. Freshman Kyle Short (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had time of 28:33.1, sophomore Vin Ferrer (Belford, N.J.) had a mark of 28:56.8, and sophomore Mark Volinski (Avon, Conn.) posted a time of 29:12.5. Freshman Ernie Lustenring (Massapequa, N.Y.) finished in 30:20.8 and was followed by sophomore Adrian Ambrose (Trumbull, Conn.) in 30:30.8, junior Jeff Paul (Schenectady, N.Y.) in 31:02.8, sophomore Vinny Camporeale (Toms River, N.J.) in 31:14.0 and senior Kevin Manke (Ridgewood, N.J.) in 34:09.4
On the women's side, freshman Samantha Goodnow (Deerfield, Conn.) ran a time of 26:18.9 while senior Caroline Conant (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) finished in 26:36.9. Sophomore Lauren Smith (Milton, Mass.) posted a time of 26:55.2 while classmate Kelly Kramer (Massapequa, N.Y.) had a time of 27:09.7. Freshman Elizabeth Butrick (Torrington, Conn.) had a time of 29:29.3 while sophomore Skyler Lapuc (North Providence, R.I.) recorded a time of 30:40.8.
Iona registered 17 points to win the men's event while Marist was the runner-up with 57 points. Rider was third with 115 and was followed by Manhattan (125), Fairfield (141), Loyola (147), Canisius (168), Niagara (200), and Siena (266).
In the women's race, Iona recorded 27 points while Marist came in second with 56. Canisius was third with 66 points and was followed by Loyola (94), Rider (144), Fairfield, (157), Manhattan (214), Niagara (243), Siena (258), and Saint Peter's (261).
After the race, Flanagan, Ambrose, Ferrer, Heslin, Manke, and Matt Brunelle (Oakham, Mass.) were named to the Men's MAAC All-Academic Team while Davis, Kramer, Londregan, Tehan, and Caroline Riley (Mystic, Conn.) were named to the Women's MAAC All-Academic Team.
Fairfield returns to action on November 14 when they head to the NCAA Regionals at Franklin Park.
