BRONX, N.Y. - The Fairfield University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2005 season at the Fordham Invitational at the famed Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday afternoon. The Fairfield men, finished 13th overall, and the Fairfield women finished 14th overall.
Princeton took both the men's and women's team titles, as they had five women in the top ten finishers and had four in the top ten on the men's side.
On the women's side, Providence's Fiona Crombie won the individual title, covering the 5k course in 17:48.36. Fairfield was led by senior Kara O'Connell who finished 134th overall in a time of 22:00. Junior Courtney Kincaid was second on the team with a 22:14, and senior Maryellen Pribish rounded out the top three with a 22:28.
Freshman Jennifer Booton, who was running in her first collegiate race, posted a solid 22:42. Junior Liz Casey followed with a 22:53, and junior Kelli Connors posted a 23:33. Freshmen Lauren Asermely had a 23:57, and freshman Tara Jackson posted a 26:07.
On the men's side, Providence's Martin Fagan won the individual title, covering the 8k course in 25:26.01. Fairfield was led by senior A.J. Kastanotis who finished 96th overall in a time of 29:40. Junior Dan Ryan was second on the team with a 29:51, and sophomore Duncan Gerity was the third Fairfield runner with a 30:30.
Sophomore Matthew Ginn was fourth on the men's squad with a 30:50, and sophomore A.J. Lawrence recorded a 31:29. Junior John LaCagnina finished with a 32:03, and junior John Worrall crossed the finish line with a 32:14.
Fairfield will be back in action next Saturday, as it heads to New Britain, Conn. for the CCSU Ted Owen Invitational at Stanley Quarter Park.
