FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University Director of Athletics Eugene Doris announced the hiring of Richard Brelsford as assistant coach of the men's and women's cross country teams. In addition, Bryan Mahoney and Stephanie Stote will serve as volunteer assistants this fall.
Brelsford is a 2002 graduate of Quinnipiac University, and served as a captain of the cross country and track and field teams in his last two years. He earned a master's degree in accounting from Quinnipiac in 2003.
While running for Quinnipiac, he finished 17th overall at the 2001 Connecticut Intercollegiate Invitational. In the 2000 CTC Invitational, the Bunnell High School graduate finished in the top-20. He was also selected to the Northeast Conference (NEC) Honor Roll in 2002 and 2003.
Following his collegiate career, he continued to run competitively for the Woodbridge Running Company Road Racing Team, a USATF member. He finished 10th place at the 2003 Long Island Half-Marathon with a time of 1:17. In 2004, he finished eighth overall at the Long Island Marathon with a 2:57.23.
He is currently employed at Ernst & Young LLP in New York City, as an auditor in the Assurance and Advisory Business Services Department. Brelsford began his coaching career as the head coach of the Bethany Middle School track and field program.
Mahoney, a 2005 graduate of Fairfield was a four-year member of the cross country team. Last season, he was Fairfield's top male finisher in every race. He finished his collegiate career with two of the top-20 five-mile times at Van Cortlandt Park in school-history. His 27:10, at last seasons IC4A Championships in November, ranks 10th all-time and his 27:23.7, at the 2001 IC4A Championships, ranks 19th on the school-list.
Stote also graduated this past May, and was the co-captain of the women's team last fall. She led Fairfield in the first four races of the season, including a 20:02.5 at the Fairfield Invitational, and a near identical 20:02 at the New England Championships in Boston, Mass. At last year's Fordham Invitational, she set the 20th-best 5K time in school-history, at Van Cortlandt Park, with a 20:49.58.
Fairfield begins the 2005 season at the Fordham RAM Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Van Cortlandt Park, in the Bronx.
