FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Just two races into the 2004 season the Fairfield University men's and women's cross country teams continue to improve on a daily basis, and fresh off a week off, both teams will return to the race course on Friday at the 2004 Quinnipiac Invitational, on the campus of Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn.
Both teams finished 11th out of 18 teams in the Fordham Invitational on Sept. 11 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
On the men's side, senior Bryan Mahoney (Milton, Mass./Milton) led the Fairfield men, finishing 31st our of 170 runners with a 27:27:06 over the 5k course. Junior co-captain Justin Rindos (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) was second on the team with a 29:48:83. The pair was followed by Devin Hagan (Bedford, Mass./Billerica Memorial) who finished third on the team with a 30:11.
Senior co-captain Stephanie Stote (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic) was the top women's runner for the Stags with a 20:49:58. Senior co-captain Lauren Wilson (Queesnsbury, N.Y./Queensbury) was second with a 21:27:60, and junior Kara O'Connell (Westborough, Mass./Notre Dame) was third on the team with a 21:35:11.
Both teams finished fifth at last season's race, Rindos traversed the course in 28:13.1 to finish as the Stags top runner followed by Mahoney who was running in his first race of the season with a 28:28.2.
Wilson posted a 20:32.9, to finish third on the team, Stote and O'Connell followed with a 20:34.5 and 21:15.9 respectively.
After the Quinnipiac Invitational, Fairfield will host the 28th running of the Fairfield University Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 2, on the Fairfield campus.
