Four Stags Wrap Up Summer Baseball Season

Aug 2, 2007

As the summer winds down so does the collegiate league baseball season. For the four Stags that participated in the various leagues, summer 2007 has been a success.

A trio of Stags has helped their respective teams to the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) playoffs. Pitcher Ryan Calabrese helped the Elmira Pioneers to the 2007 NYCBL Western Division Championship. Calabrese currently posts a 3.07 ERA with a 5-2 record in 11 appearances. The righty, who has won his last three starts, has 13 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched. Calabrese and the Pioneers take on the Geneva Red Wings in the Western Division Finals beginning August 2.

Pitcher Doug Ciallella and catcher Mike Weiner also made an appearance in the NYCBL playoffs with the Alleghany County Nitros. The Nitros fell to the Geneva Red Wings in the Western Division Semifinals to finish the season 24-17-1. Ciallella posted a 3.75 ERA in nine appearances, including five starts. The righthander posted a 3-3 record with 20 strikeouts in 36 innings of work. He tossed a complete game shutout on June 16 against the Webster Yankees, allowing just five hits while striking out five batters. Weiner appeared in 37 games, starting 34 contests behind the plate. He batted just .205 but drove in 15 runs and crossed the plate 13 times.

Out in Ohio, pitcher Rob Gariano had an outstanding summer on the mound for the Licking County Settlers in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. He led the team with a 2.70 ERA, a 3-2 record, and also notched a save. He logged 36.2 innings in 13 appearances, along with five starts, and struck out 30 batters.

Also suiting up for the Settlers was Brian Rudolph, who played in 32 games with 29 starts. The outfielder hit .250, but came on strong in the latter portion of the season. He led the team in doubles with seven, and was third on the team in hits (26) and RBI (15) while scoring 12 runs.
