Baseball Picked to Finish Fourth in MAAC Poll

Feb 7, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team was tabbed to finish tied for fourth place in the conference according to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll. Senior Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.

Fairfield was predicted to tie with Siena while Canisius was picked as the team to beat in the MAAC. The Griffs were followed closely behind by Manhattan and Marist.

The Stags finished their 2007 campaign with a 12-14 record in the conference to place sixth overall and just out of playoff contention. Fairfield also notched an 18-28 overall record. This season, the Stags return their entire starting lineup from 2007 and nearly their entire pitching staff.

Allen, who was also named to the 2008 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award Watch List, was an All-MAAC First Team selection last season as the designated hitter. Allen led the squad in every major offensive category, setting a single-season program record, and earning national rankings in three offensive categories. He posted a team-best .380 batting average, with a team-high 35 RBI and 35 runs scored. Allen also notched a league-best 23 doubles on the year to set Fairfield's single season record, eclipsing a mark set in 1996. In addition, he finished the year ranked third in the nation in that category.

The Stags open their 2008 campaign Feb. 22-24 at the Coca-Cola Classic hosted by South Alabama. Fairfield will face the host Jaguars on Feb. 22 followed by match-ups with Kentucky and Xavier.
