Baseball Falls to South Alabama 11-1 in Eight Innings

MOBILE, Ala. - The Stags fell to the University of South Alabama, 11-1, in an eight-inning nightcap at the Coca-Cola Classic on Saturday evening.

Fairfield (0-2) posted 10 hits during the game but only pushed one run across the plate. The Jaguars' (1-0) Eric Gonzalez picked up the win going six innings and allowing just one run on seven hits. South Alabama's relievers held the Stags scoreless in the final two innings of play.

The Jaguars scored at least one run in each of the first three innings to open up a 5-0 lead. South Alabama then added two more in the bottom of the fifth inning. Fairfield scored its only run in the top of the sixth inning as Pat Hoban (Malvern, Pa.) scored on a single by senior Brian Rudolph (Washington Twp., N.J.).

Junior Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) took this loss after allowing seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in four and a third innings of work. Sophomore Justin Servino (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) had a solid night on the mound, throwing two hitless innings of relief while walking two batters.

At the plate, senior Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 on the night while Mike Joyce (Smithtown, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a double.

Fairfield wraps up action at the Coca-Cola Classic on Sunday, February 24, with an 11 a.m. game against Kentucky.
