Feb 24, 2008
MOBILE, Ala. - The Fairfield University baseball team fell to No. 20 Kentucky, 13-3, in the final day of play at the Coca-Cola Classic. For the Stags, it was their third game in 24 hours at the tournament. Freshman Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) highlighted the day with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Kentucky (2-0) got things going in the bottom of the first inning as Bryan Rose drove in a pair of runs on a double off of Fairfield (0-3) pitcher Ryan Calabrese (Wantagh, N.Y.).
The Stags responded in the top of the second inning by tacking three runs on the board. Senior Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) led off with a double down the left field line and came around to score on a single by senior Brian Rudolph (Washington Twp., N.J.). With runners on first and second and no outs, sophomore Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) doubled to right field to score Rudolph. One batter later, freshman Mike Bourdon (Simsbury, Conn.) singled home Nathans to give Fairfield the 3-2 lead.
The lead did not last long as the Wildcats put up six runs in the bottom half of the frame to pull head 8-3. Kentucky added a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and one run in the seventh.
Calabrese (0-1) picked up the loss after allowing eight runs, three earned, on six hits in three innings. Freshman Mike Rubertone (Manhasset, N.Y.) made his collegiate debut giving up four runs on two hits and four walks. Sophomore Dan Urbanovich (Nutley, N.J.) pitched two solid innings of hitless, scoreless relief.
Scott Green, a top-20 Major League draft prospect, picked up the win for Kentucky giving up just three runs on seven hits while fanning 10 batters in five innings of work. Mike Kaczmarek and Tyler Henry pitched the final two innings and retired six of the seven batters faced.
Fairfield returns to action next week when it makes its annual trip to Bradenton, Fla. for a week's worth of games. The Stags will start the trip off with a March 2 meeting with Big East foe Villanova.
