Baseball Drops 8-0 Decision to Bowling Green

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Fairfield University baseball team was shutout by Bowling Green this morning, falling 8-0. The Stags (2-6) were held to a season-low six hits and were shutout for the first time this year.

The Falcons (2-6) Kevin Leady and Charles Wooten combined for the six-hit shutout. Leady (1-0) earned the win with a five-inning effort in which he allowed just four hits while striking out six batters in five innings of work. Wooten tossed the final four frames scattering two hits while striking out three.

Sophomore Jason Rago (Fairfield, Conn.) was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with a walk. Two of his three hits were doubles. Rookies Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) and Justin Nusblatt (Doylestown, Pa.) each recorded triples while sophomore Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) had a pinch-hit single.

Bowling Green opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Brian Hangbers blasted a two-run homerun. The Falcons added three more in the bottom of the third to open up a 5-0 lead. The Stags had several chances to score, including the fifth inning when Nathans led the frame off with a triple.

Hangbers hit his second homer of the day off of Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) in the bottom of the seventh to increase the lead to 6-0. The Falcons added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Stags had another chance to score in the top of the ninth after Rago doubled and Tiagwad singled but the runners were left stranded.

Sophomore Scott Gussaroff (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) picked up the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in three innings. Sophomore Justin Servino (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) threw three scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit.

Senior Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) had his 24-game on-base streak snapped after going 0-for-4 on the day.

Fairfield will conclude its stay in Florida tomorrow with a 1p.m. game against Central Michigan.
