Baseball Falls to St. John's 11-0 In Home Opener

, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped its home opener to St. John's University, 11-0, this afternoon at Alumni Diamond.

The Red Storm pitching staff combined for the two-hit shutout of the Stags to improve to 13-4 on the season. Lefthander Matt Tosoni (2-0) picked up the win for the defending Big East Regular Season Champions after scattering two hits over six innings while striking out four batters. Miguel Valcarcel pitched two hitless innings while Rich Armento threw a hitless eighth.

Sophomores Jason Rago (Fairfield, Conn.) and Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) had the two hits for the Stags. Tiagwad roped a double to left field in the first inning while Rago led of the second inning with a single to right field. Junior Mike Joyce (Smithtown, N.Y.) walked twice for the Fairfield.

Sophomore Kevin Fico (Stamford, Conn.) took the loss after giving up eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits in six innings to hot St. John's bats. Junior Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) pitched two innings of relief in which he allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits. Sophomore Dan Urbanovich (Nutley, N.J.) allowed just one hit and struck out a batter in his one inning of work.               

St. John's opened the game with a three-run first inning and added a pair of runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead. The Red Storm extended its lead to 8-0 in the sixth inning while also scoring in the seventh and eighth frames.

Fairfield (2-12) hits the road on March 20 to take on Quinnipiac. The Stags open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on March 22 when they host Marist at Alumni Diamond.
