FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior Mike
Weiner (Easton, Conn.) drew a bases loaded walk in the
bottom of the tenth inning to help the Fairfield University
baseball team to a 4-3 victory against Marist College this
afternoon at Alumni Diamond. With the win, the Stags captured the
season series with the Red Foxes and improved to 2-1 in the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and to 4-14 overall.
Weiner's walk capped a two-inning rally by the Stags in their come-from-behind victory. Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, senior Brian Rudolph (Washington Twp., N.J.) doubled to center field to drive in senior Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y.) and tie the game.
In the tenth, the Stags put together back-to-back singles by sophomore Jason Rago (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) to put runners on first and second with one out. Junior Mike Joyce (Smithtown, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases for Weiner. The first three pitches Weiner saw from Marist reliever Rob Glowacki were balls but Glowacki was able to work the count to 3-2. After fouling two pitches off, Weiner's patience at the plate paid off as he was able draw the game-winning walk.
The two teams battled in the early going as the game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Marist tacked two runs on the board. Fairfield responded by adding two of their in the bottom of the frame. With one out, sophomore Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) doubled down the left field line and then came around to score on a double by Rudolph. After Rudolph stole third base, he crossed the plate on a single by Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) to tie the game 2-2.
Marist (4-9, 1-2 MAAC) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Ben Henderson. The Red Foxes continued to threaten in the inning, but sophomore Kevin Fico (Stamford, Conn.) was able to get Kyle Meyer to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Reliever Dan Urbanovich (Nutley, N.J.) picked up his second win of the season after allowing two hits in the final inning and two-thirds. Starter Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) received the no-decision after going four and two-thirds innings and giving up two runs on five hits. Fico pitched three and two-thirds innings giving up one run on six hits in relief.
Rago and Rudolph had solid days at the plate for the Stags. Rago was 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored while Rudolph collected a pair of doubles, two RBI, and a run scored. Tiagwad went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Fairfield is back in action on March 27 when it hosts Central Connecticut at 3 p.m. at Alumni Diamond.
