Rob Gariano Named MAAC Pitcher of the Week

Mar 25, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University sophomore Rob Gariano (Nutley, N.J.) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Pitcher of the Week after a stellar outing against Marist College on March 22.

Gariano tossed a two-hit complete game shutout against the Red Foxes to lead the Stags to the 1-0 victory. He went all nine innings, scattering the two hits, while striking out seven batters and walking just two. Gariano retired 15 of the last 18 batters he faced.

The effort was his third career complete game shutout after completing the task twice last season. Each time he was rewarded with MAAC Rookie of the Week honors. His first complete game shutout came in the Stags' 4-0 victory against Iona. In that game, Gariano pitched all seven innings in the second game of a doubleheader, striking out six batters while not allowing a walk. His second career shutout came in the form of a one-hitter against Rider in the season finale. After giving up the lone hit of the game in the fifth inning, he mowed down 14 consecutive batters until the ninth inning when he allowed a two-out walk. He also set down 13 of the first 14 batters he faced.

Gariano is 2-2 this season and yields a 5.68 ERA in six appearances. He has struck out 22 batters in 25 and one-third innings of work.

Fairfield (4-13, 1-1 MAAC) is back in action on March 27 when it hosts Central Connecticut at 3 p.m. at Alumni Diamond.
