BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Niagara University in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action this afternoon. The Stags were edged 3-2 in game one and were on the losing end of a 7-1 decision in the nightcap. Fairfield falls to 5-16 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC while Niagara improves to 10-9 overall and evens its record to 3-3 in the league.

The Purple Eagles took game one on a bases loaded walk-off single by Graham Skelhorne-Gross in the seventh. Niagara had tied the game, 2-2, one inning earlier on a throwing error by the Stags.

In the early going, Fairfield scored first in the opening inning as freshman Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) singled home senior Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.). Niagara tied the score in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Clint Elkins. Fairfield took the 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by DeSimone which scored David Dudish (Olney, Md.). Senior Ryan Calabrese (Wantagh, N.Y.) took the loss, going six and a third innings, giving up seven hits while striking out four batters.

In game two, Fairfield scored first once again this time on a solo homerun by sophomore Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) in the first inning. The homerun was the first of Tiagwad's collegiate career. Niagara answered in the bottom of the inning putting two runs on the board. The Purple Eagles extended their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning on a homer by Matt Lucchesi.

Starter Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) settled down allowing just one Niagara hit over the next five innings but Fairfield was unable to get its offense going against Marcus Spaulding. The Purple Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring four runs off of reliever Dan Urbanovich (Nutley, N.J.).

Ciallella (0-3) went seven innings, scattering three runs on four hits with two strikeouts in the loss. Spaulding (3-1) earned the win after scattering six hits in the complete-game effort.

Offensively, DeSimone led the way for the Stags going a combined 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored.

Fairfield returns to the diamond on April 2 when it hosts Fordham at 3:30 p.m. at Alumni Diamond. The Stags hit the road on April 3 for a trip to UConn before resuming MAAC play, April 5-6, at Saint Peter's.
