JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Fairfield University baseball team took a doubleheader from Saint Peter's College this afternoon to complete the series sweep and improve to 6-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Stags (8-18) took game one by a score of 10-2 while edging the Peacocks (12-14, 4-5 MAAC), 2-1, in a pitchers' duel.
In the opening game, senior Ryan Calabrese (Wantagh, N.Y.) notched his first win of the season with a solid effort on the mound. The right-hander scattered two runs on three hits in five innings of work while striking out four batters. Offensively, senior Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) led the way, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
With the first game tied 1-1, the Stags broke it open in the fourth inning putting five runs on the board. Fairfield added three more in the fifth inning to take a 9-1 lead. The Peacocks scored in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Stags quickly got the run back in the top of the sixth as senior Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) scored from first on an error in the outfield. Reliever Dan Urbanovich (Nutley, N.J.) shut the door on Saint Peter's in the final two innings allowing just two hits.
In the night cap, pitcher Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) earned his first win of the year by tossing a five-hit complete game. The right-hander took a shutout into the sixth inning but the Peacocks' Kevin Madison, who led the inning off with a single, scored on a ground out. The Peacocks' Chris Innis went eight innings, scattering two runs, one earned, on five hits with eight strikeouts in the loss.
The Stags, who never trailed in either game of the doubleheader, got on the board in the top of the first inning in game two. Senior Brian Rudolph (Washington Twp., N.J.) tripled home sophomore Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) with one out to give Fairfield the 1-0 lead. The Stags struck again in the top of third as Tiagwad trotted home after Innis surrendered a bases loaded walk to sophomore Jason Rago (Fairfield, Conn.).
Tiagwad went 2-for-4 in game two with two runs scored while Rudolph went 2-for-4.
Freshman Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.), the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week, had his 11-game hitting streak snapped after going 0-for-2 with two walks in game two.
Fairfield continues its 10-game road swing with a trip to Central Connecticut on April 8.
