Apr 8, 2008
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team was topped by Central Connecticut State University in a non-conference game at Beehive Stadium.
The Blue Devils' (9-11) pitching staff combined for a six-hitter taking a shutout in the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth, the Stags (8-19) managed their lone run of the contest. With two outs in the inning, senior Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) singled home classmate Pat Hoban (Malvern, Pa.) to put the Stags on the board. DeSimone finished the day 2-for-5 at the plate.
Central Connecticut started the scoring in the bottom of the third inning putting two runs on the board off of sophomore Rick Piccirillo (Trumbull, Conn.). The Blue Devils extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning before adding their final two runs in the seventh.
Piccirillo (0-2) was tagged with the loss after going four innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five batters. CCSU's Brett Chachko picked up the win throwing three innings, while allowing just one hit.
After surrendering a leadoff single to DeSimone, Chachko and Taylor Koskowski retired the next 14 batters. Senior Mike Weiner (Easton, Conn.) broke the hitless streak with a two-out single in the fifth inning. The Stags had their chances throughout the remainder of the game, but stranded nine men on base.
Fairfield resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend when it travels to Siena for a three-game series. The Stags conclude their 10-game road swing on April 16 with a doubleheader at Yale.
