LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team split a doubleheader with Siena College this afternoon as the Stags (9-20, 7-4 MAAC) continued its 10-game road swing. Fairfield took game one by a score of 6-4 while Siena (9-21, 5-6 MAAC) earned the 20-6 win in the night cap.
After both teams scored in the first inning of game one, the stalemate lasted until the seventh inning. In the top of the frame, sophomore David Dudish (Olney, Md.) homered to leftfield to put the Stags on top 2-1. Fairfield broke the game open in the top of the eighth inning with a pair of homeruns. With one out, Jason Rago (Fairfield, Conn.) launched a two-run bomb to centerfield to make the score 4-1. After Mike Joyce (Smithtown, N.Y.) doubled, Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) hit a two-run homer to left center to put the Stags on top, 6-1. Siena got one of the runs back on a solo shot by Nick Messinger. The Saints mounted a rally in the bottom of the ninth to pull within 6-4, but Fairfield was able to hold them off for the victory.
Sophomore Rob Gariano (Nutley, N.J) picked up the win in the opening game after scattering one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work to improve to 4-2 on the season. Siena's Craig Chaput took the loss after giving up six runs, five earned on eight hits while striking out eight in seven and a third innings.
The Saints avenged the loss in game two by opening with a seven-run first inning off of Ryan Calabrese (Wantagh, N.Y.). Siena then tagged reliever Rick Piccirillo (Trumbull, Conn.) for four additional runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend its lead to 11-1.
The Stags' first run of the game came in the top of the second inning on a Pat Hoban (Malvern, Pa.) sacrifice fly that brought home Dudish. Fairfield added another run in the top of the third as Dudish singled to leftfield to plate Rago and set the score at 11-2. Siena added a run in the third and a pair in the fourth to widen the gap to 14-2. Fairfield scored in the top fifth inning as Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) touched the plate on a fielder's choice. But, the Saints put together a six-run sixth inning to increase its lead. The Stags added three runs in the top of the seventh but it was not enough.
Dudish went a combined 4-for-6 on the day with three RBI and three runs scored. Rago went 4-for-9 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The two teams will conclude the season series tomorrow, April 13, at noon.
