Apr 13, 2008
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team scored 12 runs in the top of the eighth inning to overtake Siena, 18-10, and capture the series from the Saints. With the win, the Stags improve to 10-20 overall and 8-4 in the MAAC while Siena falls to 9-22 overall and 5-7 in the league.
Trailing 10-6, Fairfield loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning. With no outs, Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) singled home Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) to make the score 10-7. Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) followed with a fielder's choice to plate Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y.) and make it a two-run game. A wild pitch resulted in the Stags' third running of the inning as Mike Joyce (Smithtown, N.Y.) touched the plate to make the score 10-9. After Nathans walked, Jason Rago (Fairfield, Conn.) singled to leftfield to plate Tiagwad and tie the game. After a Dudish single, senior Mike Weiner (Easton, Conn.) singled up the middle to score Rago and Nathans and put the Stags on top, 12-10. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Joyce drew a walk to force home Dudish and add another run for the Stags. DeSimone then singled, driving in two runs to make the score, 15-10. Tiagwad and Nathans followed with RBI singles while Rago reached on an error to push three runs across the plate and take an 18-10 lead.
DeSimone went 6-for-7 on the day with three RBI and three runs scored. His six hits, all of which were singles, sets the Fairfield record for hits and singles in a game. Rago tied the same record of five last season.
Tiagwad went 3-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored while Allen scored four runs.
Fairfield struck first as David Dudish (Olney, Md.) crossed the plate on an RBI single by Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) in the top of the first inning. Siena, however, took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second on a grand slam by Juan Amador. Dudish made it a one-run game in the top of the third inning with a two-out bases loaded single which scored Tiagwad and DeSimone. The Saints got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Andy Messinger.
The Stags pulled within 5-4 in the top of the fourth inning as Tiagwad delivered a two-out single to leftfield to score Allen. In the bottom of the fourth, Siena's Rick Seltzer hit a two-run homer to increase the lead to 7-4. The Saints added two more runs in the inning to make the score 9-4.
In the top of the fifth inning, Allen hit a two-run homer, his second in three games, to pull the Stags within 9-6. The Saints tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to push the score to 10-6.
Fairfield wraps up its 10-game road swing on April 16 with a doubleheader at Yale beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Stags return home April 19-20 to host Rider in an important MAAC series.
