FAIRFIELD, Conn.  - The Fairfield University baseball team suffered a tough 12-0 loss to the University of Connecticut this afternoon in a non-conference game at Alumni Diamond.

The Stags (11-25) could not crack the Huskies' (21-21) pitching staff as they were held to just two hits on the day. Five pitchers combined for the shutout while Matt McDonald (3-3) picked up the win. Seniors Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) and Pat Hoban (Malvern, Pa.) recorded Fairfield's hits.

UConn took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Fairfield threatened in the bottom half of the inning, putting runners on first and second but were unable to score. The Huskies broke the game open in the top of the second putting seven runs on the board to widen the gap to 9-0.

In the bottom of the third the Stags made some noise as DeSimone led the inning off with a double while sophomore Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) followed with a walk. After freshman Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice, McDonald settled down and retired the next two batters to end the Fairfield threat.

UConn added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning and did not score the rest of the way.

Junior Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) threw two scoreless innings of relief allowing three hits while striking out two batters. Sophomores Kevin Fico (Stamford, Conn.) and Justin Servino (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) both tossed back-to-back scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth.

Fairfield will travel to Quinnipiac on April 24 before resuming MAAC play, April 26-27 at Iona.
