Baseball Falls to URI 12-6

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Fairfield University baseball team suffered its second straight loss, falling to Rhode Island, 12-6, on Tuesday at Chain of Lakes Stadium.

The Rams (4-2) struck first in the bottom of the first inning as they tagged the Stags for eight runs. URI then added a run in the bottom of the second to take the 9-0 lead. Fairfield got two of the runs back in the top of the third as Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) trotted home on a Jason Rago (Fairfield, Conn.) double. Rago then came around to score on a single by David Dudish (Olney, Md.).

The Stags added another run in the top of the fifth as Carmine DeVito (Plainview, N.Y.) tripled home Mike Joyce (Smithtown, N.Y.) to make the score 11-3. Fairfield also posted a run in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the ninth, rookie Mark Skrapits (Bronx, N.Y.) delivered a two-RBI single for Fairfield's final runs of the day.

Senior Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) took the loss, allowing 11 runs, 10 earned, on nine hits in five innings. Senior Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, while junior Justin Servino (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) allowed on run on a hit with two strikeouts in the bottom of the eighth.

Nathans, Dudish, Joyce, and DeVito each went 2-for-5 on the day with a run scored.
