Baseball Falls to Maine 3-0
Mar 4, 2009
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Fairfield University bats could not crack University of Maine hurler Jonathan Balentina as he tossed gem in the 3-0 complete game shutout of the Stags this afternoon at Chain of Lakes Stadium. With the loss, Fairfield falls to 0-4 while Maine evens its record at 4-4.
Balentina scattered six hits, two of which belonged to sophomore Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.), and struck out seven batters.
Junior Kevin Fico (Stamford, Conn.) allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits. He struck out three in six innings for work. Senior Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) pitched the final two innings of the day, striking out two batters while allowing just two hits.
Maine got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Joey Martin and added another run in the bottom of the third. Fairfield threatened in the top of the fifth, putting a runner on third but the Stags were unable to push the runner across the plate. A trio of errors hurt the Stags in the bottom of the frame, allowing the Black Bears to take the 3-0 lead.
Fairfield faces Rhode Island tomorrow, March 5, before a rematch with Maine on March 6. The Stags wrap up their stay in Florida against Bowling Green on Saturday.
