Baseball Falls to St. John's 12-5

JAMAICA, N.Y. - Despite notching 12 hits on the day, the Fairfield University baseball team fell to St. John's by a score of 12-5 to conclude the season series with the Big East Red Storm. Sophomore Chris Horning (Potomac, Md.) went 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs scored.

Freshman Tyler Wosleger (East Hampton, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

St. John's (8-6) opened a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Fairfield (3-9) responded with two runs in the top of the second. Horning opened the inning with a double to left center and came around to score on a groundout by freshman Ryan Furbeck (Oakland, N.J.). Junior Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) followed with a single to left to put the Stags on top 2-1.

The Red Storm broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning, putting seven runs on the board. Fairfield got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth on a single by Nathans, but St. John's answered with two in the bottom half of the inning.

The Stags posted two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Horning doubled to left center to drive in Bill Rafferty (Guilderland, N.Y.) from second base. Wosleger followed with an RBI single to plate Horning and make the score 10-5. The Red Storm added their final two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Senior Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.Y.) took the loss for the Stags allowing eight runs on 11 hits in three innings. Freshman Kyle Goldstein (Southbury, Conn.) pitched 1.2 innings and was charged with four runs. Junior Rick Piccirillo (Trumbull, Conn.) threw the last 3.1 scattering three hits and striking out four batters. The Red Storm's Eddie Medina got the win, allowing five runs, one earned on 10 hits in five innings. Kevin Kilpatrick threw four scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Fairfield returns home to host Quinnipiac on March 19. The Stags open MAAC play on March 21 with a doubleheader against Siena.
