Mar 29, 2009
BALTIMORE - Freshman Mark Skrapits (Bronx, N.Y.) drove in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to lift Fairfield to a 5-4 victory over UMBC this afternoon. With the win, Fairfield has captured seven straight to improve to 10-9 overall this season.
Trailing 4-3 in the top of the ninth, the Stags were able to capitalize on three errors by the Retrievers (4-13) to score two runs and pick up the victory. With two outs, Skrapits doubled to right center to score Larry Cornelia (Dix Hills, N.Y.). Skrapits then scored the game-winner on a Carmine DeVito (Plainview, N.Y.) grounder that was thrown over the first baseman's head. Junior Justin Servino (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) closed out the ninth, fanning two of the four batters he faced, to earn his fourth save of the season.
UMBC opened up a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Fairfield began chipping away at the lead in the top of the fourth as Skrapits scored on a DeVito double to left center. The Stags added two more in the top of the fifth as Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) and Ryan Furbeck (Oakland, N.J.) scored on a single to center by junior David Dudish (Olney, Md.) to make the score 4-3.
