Apr 1, 2009
BRONX, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team won its ninth-straight game with a 6-2 win at Fordham this afternoon. Senior Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) picked up his first win of the season while senior Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) tied the program record for career appearances.
Ciallella (1-3) scattered two runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings for the win while Gallagher tossed 1.1 innings of relief, allowing one hit while fanning three batters. The appearance marked the 56th of Gallagher's career which ties former Stag Dan Breen for the all-time record at Fairfield.
The Stags (12-9) offense was balanced as eight of the nine batters either scored or drove in a run. Freshman Mark Skrapits (Bronx, N.Y.), playing in front of a hometown crowd, led the way going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Fairfield opened the scoring in the top of the second inning taking a 2-0 lead. Junior Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) led the frame off with a walk and then scored on a double by junior David Dudish (Olney, Md.). Dudish later scored on a sac fly by Chris Horning (Potomac, Md.). The Stags added another run in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.) which scored Ryan Furbeck (Oakland, N.J.).
The Rams (9-15) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Nick Martinez and pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh on another RBI single by Martinez.
Fairfield added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded and one out, Skrapits doubled to left field driving in two runs to give the Stags a 5-2 lead. Furbeck followed with a sac fly to bring in Horning and make the score 6-2. The Rams threatened in the bottom half of the frame, but junior Justin Servino (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) was able to get the Stags out of the inning unscathed for the win.
Fairfield's winning streak is the longest since 1978 when the Stags were victorious in nine-straight games. Fairfield's longest winning streak is 10 games which was achieved in 1972.
Fairfield returns to Alumni Diamond on April 4 to host Niagara in a doubleheader beginning at noon. Saturday's game will be streamed live for a small fee on www.FairfieldStags.com in partnership with B2 Networks.
