
Baseball Edged By Central Connecticut 5-4

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -The Fairfield University baseball team dropped its fourth-straight with a tough 5-4 loss to Central Connecticut State this afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The Blue Devils (12-8) came from behind, using a four-run seventh inning, for the win.
The Stags (12-13) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as rookie Mark Skrapits (Bronx, N.Y.) scored on a fielder's choice by junior Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.). The Blue Devils answered in the top of the second with a sacrifice fly by Kyle Zarotney to tie the game. Fairfield took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as junior David Dudish (Olney, Md.) scored on a groundout by Skrapits. The Stags pulled out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth as Dudish scored on an RBI double by Skrapits.
In the top of the seventh, CCSU rallied as Anthony Scialdone doubled down the rightfield line to plate two runs to the tie the game 3-3. Pat Epps followed with a double of his own to give the Blue Devils the 4-3 lead. The final run of the inning came on a sac fly by Tommy Meade.
Fairfield cut the deficit to a run in the bottom of half of the frame as Carmine DeVito (Plainview, N.Y.) scored on wild pitch. The Stags continued to threaten with runners on first and third and one out, but Wes Poppe was able to induce the double play to end the inning. Fairfield threatened again with the bottom of the eight putting runners on first and third with one out, but once again CCSU was able to get the Stags to ground into the inning-ending double play.
Poppe (1-0) picked up the win despite allowing two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. White picked up the save allowing just one hit and 1.2 innings. For the Stags, senior Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) took the loss, giving up two runs in the seventh in relief of starter Sam Robertson (Ridgefield, Conn.). Robertson received the no-decision after going six innings, allowing three runs on three hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Junior Justin Servino (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) pitched the ninth, retiring three of the four batters he faced.
Skrapits finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while DeVito went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Catcher Chris Horning (Potomac, Md.) went 3-for-3. For CCSU, Scialdone went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Stags collected 11 hits and six walks but stranded 12 men on base while the Blue Devils picked up six hits and seven walks and left 11 stranded.
Fairfield resumes MAAC play this weekend against St. Peter's at Alumni Diamond. The two teams are set for a doubleheader on April 11 at noon and conclude the series on April 13 at 3:30pm.
