NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team split a doubleheader with Yale University this evening. After falling to the Bulldogs, 4-3, in 11 innings in the opener, the Stags posted a 7-6 victory in the night cap.
The opener, scheduled for seven innings, went that and then some, lasting 11 innings for the Stags' longest outing of the year. It was also the first extra-inning loss for Fairfield (15-15) this season. With the game deadlocked at 3-3, Yale (11-17) managed to load the bases with one out. Stefan Schropp gave the Bulldogs the victory with a sacrifice fly off of sophomore reliever Brian Comiskey (Coram, N.Y.).
The Stags opened up a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as Jason Rago (Fairfield, Conn.) blasted a two-run homerun to start things off. Freshman Nick Piccirillo (Trumbull, Conn.) scored the third run of the inning on single by Tucker Nathans (Warwick, N.Y.). The Bulldogs got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the frame on a double by Andy Megee. Yale later tied the game with a two-run fifth inning to force extra innings.
Freshman Sam Robertson (Ridgefield, Conn.) received the no-decision after allowing three runs on four hits in 4.2 innings. Senior Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) tossed 1.1 innings, allowing one hit. Junior Justin Servino (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) pitched four scoreless innings, scattering two hits and a walk while fanning three. Yale's Eric Shultz got the win after throwing 4.2 innings of hitless and scoreless baseball with four strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Fairfield took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Nathans doubled down the leftfield line to score Bill Rafferty (Guilderland, N.Y.) and Mark Skrapits (Bronx, N.Y.). Nathans then came around to score on a single by Rago. Yale countered in the bottom of the first with four runs off of starter Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.). The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the second for the 5-3 advantage.
The lead did not last long as Fairfield tied it up in the top of the third inning. Rago made the score 5-4 with an RBI triple that plated David Dudish (Olney, Md.). Rago then tied it up as he scored on a passed ball. In the top of the fourth, Rafferty singled and stole second while Nathans followed with a walk. After a double steal, Rafferty gave the Stags the 6-5 lead as he scored on a Yale error. The Bulldogs were able to get out of the bases loaded jam without any further damage. Fairfield added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.). Yale got the run back in the bottom of the inning but Gallagher was able to shut the door on the Bulldogs in the seventh for his first save of the season.
Ciallella (2-3) picked up the win despite allowing six runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Rick Piccirillo (Trumbull, Conn.) and Gallagher each threw an inning of relief allowing one hit apiece.
Nathans went a combined 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored while Rago finished the day 3-for-7 with four RBI and two runs scored.
Fairfield is resumes Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play this weekend, April 18-19, as the Stags travel to Manhattan.
