DOVER, Del. - The Fairfield University baseball team fell to Delaware State 9-3 this afternoon during the series finale on Soldier Field. Junior Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) collected his third double in as many games while sophomore Dave Jermine (North Haven, Conn.) went 3-for-5 on the day.
Delaware State (3-7-1) got to rookie hurler Robert Gariano (Nutley, N.J.) early picking up six runs during the first three innings of play. Gariano was charged with three earned runs and finished the day with five strikeouts in three innings of work.
The Stags (1-2) pounded out 10 hits during the game but did not push a run across the plate until the fifth inning. With two on and two out, Allen roped a single to left center to which scored junior Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.).
Fairfield added a run in the top of the seventh as junior Brian Rudolph (Washington Twp., N.J.) scored on a passed ball. The Stags also got on the board in the top of eighth as DeSimone crossed the plate for the second time on the day on a Jermine double to center.
Delaware State's Josh Schmidt picked up the win, throwing six innings and giving up just five hits and an earned run while striking out six batters.
For the Stags, freshman Dan Urbanovich (Nutley, N.J.) pitched three innings in relief allowing two runs on three hits while sophomore Dan Gallagher (Allendale, Pa.) threw two innings giving up five hits and one run.
Fairfield is back in action on March 6 when the Stags travel to Hartford.
