Fairfield dropped a double header on the road to Virginia Commonwealth University 7-5, and 19-2.
Sunday's twinbill was the season opener for the Stags, as Saturday's scheduled game was pushed back to Tuesday due to inclement weather.
Freshman left fielder Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI in game one.
In the first game, VCU (8-3) got on the board first with a two-run homer by Pete Farina in the home half of the second inning.
However, Fairfield would tie it in the top of the third, after senior Mark Geanuleas stroked a double to left centerfield plating freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) who ripped a one-out double to start the offense for the Stags.
Then junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) singled to left center bringing in Geanuleas for the second run of the game for the Stags.
After VCU scored in the fifth, Chilelli singled to bring in Scaife who reached on a one-out error in the top of the sixth inning.
The Rams added another run in the seventh off a sacrifice-fly to make it 4-3, but Fairfield was able to take the lead in the top of the eighth with Scaife's first round tripper of the season, and a Chilello RBI double to left centerfield, scoring junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic).
VCU scored three unearned runs in the eighth, on two hits and two Fairfield errors, to make it 7-5. Senior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) pitched seven complete innings for Fairfield, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out seven Ram hitters. Sophomore Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) was tagged with the loss, after giving up three unearned runs on two hits in an inning of work.
In the nightcap, VCU jumped out to a 5-0 lead, after a three-run homer from Scott Sizemore to left field. He would finish the second game, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored, and nine runs batted in.
Senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) would account for all of Fairfield's runs with a one-out single to right driving in Girolamo who was hit by a pitch, and sophomore Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./St. Joseph's) who singled to center to reach base.
Fairfield continues its spring break trip to Virginia with a nine-inning game against the Virginia Military Institute on Monday afternoon on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Stags and the Rams will conclude the three-game series on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for the make-up game from Saturday's postponed contest.
