BALTIMORE - UMBC's Eric Butkiewicz struck out eight Fairfield University baseball players and gave up three hits in eight innings of work, to lead the Retrievers past Fairfield, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Baseball Factory Field on the campus of UMBC. With the win UMBC improves to 2-8 on the season, as the Stags drop their second straight game to open the season.
UMBC first run of the afternoon, came in the bottom of the second inning, as a Mike Orlando single brought home Zach Clark. Orlando would later score on a throwing error.
Fairfield's only run of the afternoon came in the bottom of the fourth inning, as senior Antuan Barnett laced a triple to plate sophomore Doug Anderson who reach base on an error by the UMBC third baseman.
UMBC kept a 2-1 lead until the sixth inning, when it added a pair of runs on four hits.
The Stags were led at the plate by Barnett who went 1-for-4 with a run batted in. Greg Leaver went 1-for-3, and John Scaife was 1-for-2 with a walk. UMBC's Chris Cerullo went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in. Orlando scored three runs on the afternoon, while going 3-for-4 as well.
Fairfield's Pablo Tamayo was the hard luck loser giving up four runs on 10 hits and one walk. The senior captain also struck out three UMBC hitters in his first outing of the season, in six innings of work. Sean Keegan came on in relief of Tamayo, yielding two runs on three hits, and had a walk and a strikeout.
Fairfield returns to the diamond on March 14, when its faces Northern Illinois in the first game of a five game trip to Bradenton, Fla., over Fairfield's spring break. First pitch against the Huskies is slated for 10:30 a.m. on Sunday afternoon.
