RADFORD, Va. - Junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. While, freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a run batted in, as the Fairfield University baseball team, fell to Radford University 15-2, on Thursday afternoon at Dedmon Center Park.
Radford (2-8) was led by Alan Ashworth, Mark Fleisher, and Aaron Ranft, who each went 4-for-5, as eight different players collected hits for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Stags (0-5) added a run in the top of the second, off the bat of junior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian), who stroked his first double of the season, bringing in Scaife, for the Xaverian's graduate first RBI of the season.
The Stags added another run in the top of the ninth inning, when Chilelli singled with the bases loaded plating junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) who led the inning off with a walk, and later advanced to third, on a hit batsman, and a walk.
Radford's Steve Mignogna led the second inning off with a homerun over the left field fence, and then Ashworth added another run, after Fleisher doubled to right field. Radford scored four more times in the bottom of the third innings, three in the fourth, and two more in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman Ryan Hoffman (West Sayville, N.J./St. Anthony's) took the loss for the Stags after going two-thirds of an inning of work. Sophomore Michael Colucci (Bayonne, N.J./St. Peter's Prep), junior Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy), and freshman Ric Gruber (Elmhurst, Ill./Fenwick) all took turns on the hill for the Stags.
Colucci pitched two innings, and Breen went four and a third innings of middle relief. Gruber made his collegiate debut for the Stags pitching one inning of no-hit ball.
Justin Tubb went six and two-thirds innings of work for Radford, giving up one run on seven hits, while striking out two Fairfield hitters.
Sophomore Bryan Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./St. Joseph's), junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland), junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton), and freshman Tyler Birrittella (Tarrytown, N.Y./Tarrytown) also had base hits for the Stags.
Fairfield will wrap up its spring break trip to Virginia with a three-game series at George Mason University Saturday and Sunday. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday with a nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m.
