FAIRFAX, Va. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a doubleheader against George Mason University, on Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field, 8-2 and 7-2.

GMU (9-3) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning in the first game of the afternoon. Jimmy Freund's RBI single scoring Tyler Youngs, who walked and went to second on a balk, put the Patriots on the board first. Matt York single, plated Matt Cookset who walked and later stole second base.

The Patriots would later add a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as George Mason starter, Eric Gibbons kept the Stags hitless for six innings, before freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) broke up the no-hit bid, with an infield single.

George Mason added runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, before Fairfield crossed the plate twice in the top of the eighth inning. Freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) stroked a lead-off triple to centerfield, putting a runner in scoring position for the Stags (0-7).

That brought junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) to the plate, where he had his first run batted in with a single to right field.

The next batter for the Stags was freshman pinch-hitter Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) who reach on a fielder's choice, and senior Mark Geanuleas (Huntington Valley, Pa./Academy of the New Church) hit into what should have been an inning ending double play, but the George Mason shortstop committed an error, that allowed both Fairfield runners to be safe.

Junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) drew a one-out walk to load the bases, and junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) walked bringing in Allen.

GMU added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, to make it 8-2. Rudolph finished the afternoon 1-for-4 with a run scored, and Raymond was 1-for-4 with a run batted in, for the Stags.

Gibbons finished the day going seven and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs, one earned on three hits, and five walks. He also struck out three Stags on the day. Fairfield started senior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) struggled for the Stags giving up five runs on 10 hits and four walk, while striking out three Patriots.

In the nightcap, GMU crossed the plate three times in the first inning, as Adam Innerst smacked an RBI double, which was followed by a two-run double by Casey Slattery.

In the top of the third inning, Fairfield pushed across two runs to make it 3-2. Sophomore Pat Murphy (Bloomfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) led the inning off with an error by the GMU shortstop. He would later steal second, and come home, after junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) doubled to centerfield, to plate Murphy. Then after a fly-out by Anderson, Scaife traded places with Girolamo with an RBI double to center, scoring the Wayland High School graduate.

However, George Mason scored two more in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 7-2.

Fairfield got another rough outing from its starting pitching, as junior Steven Tyburski (Feasterville, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) gave up five runs on seven hits and six walks. Freshman Ric Gruber (Elmhurst, Ill/Fenwick) pitched one inning of relief for the Stags giving up two runs on two hits, while striking out one Patriot.

George Mason's Stacen Gant went six innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. Gant allowed two unearned runs, seven hits, and one walk, while striking out four.

Senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Stags, while Girolamo was 1-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Scaife was 1-for-3 with a run batted in.

Fairfield will close out its season opening spring break trip to Virginia with a 1 p.m. tilt against the Patriots at Spuhler Field.
