BRADENTON, Fla. - The Fairfield baseball team suffered a tough 13-2 loss to Northern Iowa this evening as the Stags opened spring break play in Florida. With the loss, Fairfield falls to 1-3 while the Panthers improve to 6-7 on the year.
The Stags started off strong by tacking two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Leadoff man Albie DeSimone laced a single up the middle to start the game for the Stags. Dave Jermine followed with a single of his own to put runners at first and second. Junior Brian Rudolph then beat out the throw on a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Clean-up hitter Jason Rago then stepped to the plate and roped a single to rightfield to score DeSimone. With one out in the inning, Peter Allen reached on a fielder's choice to push Jermine across the plate.
That would be all the runs that the Stags would get as UNI hurler Taylor Sinclair went on to scatter five hits over five scoreless innings.
Junior Ryan Calabrese held the Panthers off the board until the third inning when UNI recorded five runs on no hits taking advantage of three Fairfield errors and a balk. Calabrese tossed five and one-third innings surrendering five hits and five earned runs while striking out three batters on the night.
Fairfield continues action in Bradenton, Fla. tomorrow, March 12, when the Stags take on Vermont at 1:30 p.m.
