FAIRFAX, Va. - The Fairfield University baseball team fell to George Mason University in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon, 5-1 at Spuhler Field. Fairfield received a solid outing from starter junior Sean Keegan (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug).
GMU's Robby Jacobsen smacked a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Keegan held the Patriots to two hits through the first five innings.
The Stags would put a run on the board in the top of the seventh, as freshman pinch-hitter Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) smacked a single to centerfield.
Then sophomore Steve Ryback (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Seton Hall) doubled, putting runners in scoring position for the Stags. The next hitter for the Stags was freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who's ground out, scored Allen.
George Mason added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Adam Innerst led the inning off with a single. Then Jacobsen doubled and after an intentional walk Tyler Youngs reached on a fielder's choice to score Innerst.
Jimmy Freund then stroked a two-run double to centerfield to make it 5-1, Patriots.
Keegan pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks. Freshman Ryan Hoffman (West Sayville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) pitched two innings, giving up three runs on four hits in relief.
GMU starter Brent Hitz pitched seven innings allowing one run on six hits, while striking out four batters.
Ryback went 2-for-3 for the Stags, Allen finished the day going 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Fairfield travels to the Philadelphia area next weekend, to take part in the Villanova Baseball Bash. Fairfield will face the host Wildcats on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Stags will meet Saint Joseph's University at 12 p.m., and on Sunday the Stags will face Temple University at 12 p.m.
