PHILADELPHIA - Drexel's Brent Heaberlin went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, and three runs scored as Drexel pounded out 13 hits in a 9-4, win over the Fairfield University baseball team Friday afternoon, at Drexel Field.
The Dragons (2-8), used six innings from Brett Hraban, who gave up two runs on two hits, while striking out seven Stags along the way.
Senior Paul Gorra (Quaker Hill, Conn./Waterford) gave up five runs on seven hits, and four walks in four-and-two-thirds innings for the Stags (0-3). Gorra (0-1) also had a strike out on the afternoon. Gorra was lifted in the fifth inning in favor of junior Matt Coolidge (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) who gave up four runs on six hits. Coolidge was able strike out five hitters, while yielding only two walks.
Freshman Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) broke the ice for the Stags at the plate doubling home fellow classmate John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia), and junior Nick Hudyma (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) in the second inning.
But, Drexel would add a pair of runs in the fourth, and fifth innings. The Dragons added four insurance runs in the eighth inning on four hits, led by a RBI double from John Wieckowski.
The Stags would add two more in the top of the ninth, when Hudyma doubled to left centerfield to bring home sophomore Greg Leaver (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) who reached on a wild pitch. Hudyma came home thanks to a junior Mike Wray (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) single through the left side.
Hudyma would finish the afternoon 3-for-4 from the plate, including two doubles, and two runs scored. Giorlamo would go 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Fairfield returns to action as it travels to UMBC for a three-game series starting tomorrow afternoon at 3:45 p.m.
