BRADENTON, Fla. - The Fairfield University baseball team picked up its first win of the 2004 season on Sunday afternoon, in the first game of its Spring Break trip to Florida, over Northern Illinois, 4-1 at the Baseball Academy. Senior Tom Maisano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Chaminade) picked up his first win of the season, holding the Huskies to one run in the top of the third inning.

Maisano (1-0) yielded six hits and scattered one earned run in seven innings of work. The Long Island, native displayed good command, as he struck out five Husky hitters on the afternoon. Junior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) pitched two innings of relief, allowing only one hit and one walk, while striking out three batters.

Fairfield (1-2, 0-0 MAAC) trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth inning; however, the Stags tied the game, and then grabbed the lead in the home half of the sixth inning, with a pair of runs. Fairfield added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to close the books on the scoring.

Senior Nick Hudyma (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a triple. After hitting the three bagger, he stole home as part of a double-steal.

Senior catcher Mike Wray (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and junior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) each collected two hits on the afternoon. Wray also drove in a run.

Senior Sal Mancuso (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) would go 1-for-4 with a run batted in.

The Stags pounded out nine hits on the afternoon, while UNI (9-7) had seven hits against Fairfield pitching.

Fairfield continues its Sunshine State swing on Monday evening with a nine-inning game against Miami (Ohio) at Manatee Community College. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
