BRADENTON, Fla. - Sophomore Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) went 3-for-4 with two homeruns, two runs scored, and six runs batted in, as the Fairfield University baseball team fell to Miami of Ohio 19-9, at Robert C. Wynn Field at Manatee Community College, Monday evening. Senior Antuan Barnett (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) also had a solid night at the plate for the Stags going 2-for-4 with a homerun, two runs scored and two RBI.
The Fairfield (1-3) bats went to work in the fourth inning, when senior Sal Mancuso (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) laced a double to left field. Barnett followed with a single to center to bring home Mancuso for the Stags first run of the game. After a Jim Sheridan walk, sophomore John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) singled home Barnett, for the second run of the inning. The Fairfield rally kept going as Anderson smacked a homer to left field to clear the bases.
Miami (9-6) scored two runs in the second inning, five in the third inning, three in the fourth, five in the fifth, and four in the eighth. Mike Ferris led the way for the RedHawks going 3-for-4 with two homeruns and six runs batted in.
In the Fairfield half of the sixth inning, the Stags crossed the plate three times with three hits against Miami pitching. Barnett took a 3-2 pitch down the left field line for his first homerun of the season. Then junior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) singles, and Sheridan reached base on a fielder's choice. After a fly out, Anderson stroked his second homerun on the night.
In Fairfield's last at-bat, Scaife walked to start the inning, and was lifted for junior Mark Geanuleas (Glenside, Pa./Academy of the New Church) who pinch ran for Scaife. Anderson continued his hot night at the plate driving a run scoring double to left center field.
Senior captain Pablo Tamayo (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) started the game for the Stags, and was touched for seven runs on eight hits and one walk in three innings of work. Sophomore Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy) also had a rough outing, as he gave up eight runs on eight hits in two innings of work. Sophomore Sean Keegan (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) gave up only one hit in two innings of spotless relief.
Miami's Jeff Day gave up eight runs on eight hits, with six strikeouts in 5 and two-thirds innings on the evening. The Miami bullpen was effective, as it gave only one run on one hit in three and a third innings.
Fairfield's spring break trip record is now 1-1, and it will resume play in the Sunshine State, on Tuesday afternoon, with a nine-inning game against Bucknell at the Baseball Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
