BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball doubleheader to Marist College on Saturday evening at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Marist took the first game 4-2, and scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning in game two to steal a 5-4 win.
The snow, which blanketed much of the tri-state area, late last week, forced the game to be moved from the McCann Field on the Marist campus, to the home of the Atlantic League's Bridgeport Bluefish.
In the first game, Marist broke the ice with an RBI ground out in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Travis Musolf singled to start the game; he scored after stealing both second and third, and came home on an Andy Kiriakedes groundout.
The Red Foxes would later add an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Musolf grounded out to the Fairfield shortstop, bringing in Keith Grauer, who led the inning off, getting to second on a two-base error.
The Stags tied the game, in the top of the eighth inning, when catcher Tom Arpino doubled to centerfield, to put a runner in scoring position. Then after a strikeout by third baseman Dewey Raymond, right fielder Brian Rudolph laced a double into the left centerfield gap, scoring Arpino for the first run of the game for the Stags.
After David Soucy grounded out, left fielder Adam Chilelli hit into what appeared to be the third out of the inning, but the Marist first baseman bobbled the ball, and Rudolph came home to tie the game at, 2-2.
Marist broke the tie, as it was able to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning. Joe Sargent lined a single to left field bringing in Kiriakedes and Bryan Towler, to make it 4-2, in favor of the Red Foxes.
Fairfield starter, Steve Tyburski (0-3) went seven and two-thirds innings on the hill, giving up four runs, two earned, on eight hits and two walks. Early on, Marist was able to get to him, but Tyburski settled down and retired 10-of-11 hitters at one point.
Marist's Chris Tracez (1-3) went eight innings giving up two runs on four hits and no walks. He struck out nine Stag hitters on the evening for his first win of the season.
Rudolph, led Fairfield in the first game, going 2-for-3 at the plate with his sixth double of the season, a run scored, and a run batted in. Arpino went 2-for-4 with his third double of the year and a run scored.
In the nightcap, Fairfield was able to load the bases in the top of the first inning, and Schappert who led the inning off with a single up the middle, scored when Arpino drew a one-out walk.
Then Raymond lofted a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing in centerfielder Jim Girolamo who reached base, after laying down a bunt single.
Marist scored in the bottom of the first inning, when Musolf scored on a wild pitch. He led the inning off with a single, and swiped second and third, before scoring the Red Foxes first run of the game.
Fairfield added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, extending its lead to 4-1. Arpino grounded out to the Marist second baseman, to plate Girolamo who led the inning off with a walk. The second run of the inning came when Raymond lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring shortstop Doug Anderson.
Marist scored four runs, one earned, on two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Towler had a walk-off two-run single to right field.
The series will conclude, following the Easter holiday on Monday afternoon, at McCann Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
