FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team had its three-game winning streak snapped this afternoon falling to the University of Connecticut, 8-2, in the Stags' home opener at Alumni Diamond.
The Stags (4-9, 3-0 MAAC) posted nine hits, including a multi-hit day for freshman David Dudish (Olney, Md.), who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Peter Allen (Mamroneck, N.Y.) also doubled, collecting his eighth of the year, to reach base safely in his 13th consecutive game.
Fairfield took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as catcher Mike Weiner (Easton, Conn.) scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.).
The Huskies (9-10, 2-1 Big East) stormed back in the top of the third inning by putting up four runs in the frame to take a 4-1 lead. UConn added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to push the score to 7-1. Fairfield got one of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning as junior Brian Rudolph (Washington, Twp., N.J.) crossed the plate on a single by Dudish.
The Huskies would tack on another run in the top of the ninth on Dennis Donovan single down the leftfield line. Donovan went 3-for-5 on the day with two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Senior Matt Untiet also had a strong day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Senior Brendan McGinn (3-1) picked up the win for the Huskies, allowing just one run on five hits in five innings of work. Sophomore Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) took the loss for the Stags, giving up seven runs, four earned, in five innings of work. Senior Michael Colucci (Bayonne, N.J.) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, giving up just one hit while striking out one batter.
Fairfield travels to Central Connecticut State on March 29 for a 3 p.m. start before resuming conference play at LeMoyne on March 31.
