POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist College scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning, to defeat the Fairfield University baseball team, 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at McCann Baseball Field.
Freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) continues to surge, as he led the Stags (2-13, 0-3 MAAC) at the plate, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, and a pair of doubles to raise his season total to eight. Senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was the only other Stag with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
In the third inning, Fairfield put the first run of the day on the board, after junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) ripped a two-out single to right field, and came home when junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) smacked a double to left centerfield.
Following the third inning, both teams settled down, and it was a pitcher's dual, until Marist (4-11, 3-0 MAAC) scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Two of those runs came off the bat of Andy Kiriakedes who laced a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle to break a 1-1 tie.
Pat Feeney had an RBI single in the seventh to get the Red Foxes on the board. Feeney drove in Joe Sargent, who led off the inning with an infield single.
Fairfield would push across a run in the top of the ninth, as Rudolph roped his second double of the afternoon, down the left field line to lead the inning off. Then after advancing to third on a ground out, he came home off a sacrifice-fly from freshman Adam Chilelli.
Fairfield starter, sophomore Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) pitched well until getting tripped up in the seventh inning. Kamintzky (0-3) gave up three runs on six hits and four walks. He only gave up two hits through the first five innings on the game, and faced the minimum through the first three innings.
Marist's Erik Supplee pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief to garner his first victory of the season. Jonathan Smith got the ball for the Red Foxes, and he gave up one run on five hits in six innings of work.
The Stags are back in action on Thursday, March 29, for the 2005 home opener against the University of Connecticut. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Alumni Diamond.
