SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team suffered its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) losses of the season falling to LeMoyne in both games of a very tight doubleheader this afternoon. The Stags (4-12, 3-2 MAAC) fell in the first game 4-2, while the Dolphins (8-14, 4-1 MAAC) completed the sweep with a 2-0 win the second game.
Junior Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) went a combined 2-for-5 on the day with three walks and an RBI. Junior Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) reached base safely in both games to increase his on-base streak to 22 consecutive games.
Junior Ryan Calabrese (Wantagh, N.Y.) tossed his second-straight complete game in the opening contest, going eight innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. But it would be his counterpart, Bobby Blevins, who had a bigger day on the mound. The Dolphins' hurler became LeMoyne's career strikeout leader by fanning 10 Fairfield hitters in eight innings of work. Blevins gave up seven hits while walking two batters. The Stags put two runs on the board in the top of the second inning. After being hit by a pitch, rookie David Dudish (Olney, Md.) came around to score on a double to center by Dave Brizzolara. With runners at second and third, was able to drive in freshman Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.). LeMoyne got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning on a homerun by Phil St. Amant. The Dolphins took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning tacking two runs on the board. LeMoyne then added a run in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. Brian Rudolph (Washington Twp, N.J.)
Pitching was also the story in game two as LeMoyne's Eric Beaulac and Fairfield's Rob Gariano (Nutley, N.J.) each tossed gems. The Dolphins got on the board right away, putting up a run in the bottom of the first. LeMoyne then added another run in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead 2-0. The two runs would be all Beaulac would need as he no-hit the Stags for five innings. The no-no was broken up by junior Brian Rudolph (Washington Twp, N.J.) who singled up the middle in the sixth inning for Fairfield's lone hit of the game. Beaulac threw 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit, while giving up six walks and striking out eight batters. Gariano (1-3) went six ininings giving up two runs on five hits while striking out six batters.
Fairfield will conclude the series at LeMoyne tomorrow at noon.
