SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Brian Rudolph (Washington Twp., N.J.) drove in four runs and was one of three Stags to hit a homerun as the Fairfield baseball team edged LeMoyne, 10-9, in the series finale. With the win, the Stags improve to 5-12 overall and 4-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) while the Dolphins fall to 8-15 and 4-2 in conference action.
In addition to his four RBI and homer run, Rudolph went 2-for-4 on the day with one run scored. Catcher Mike Weiner (Easton, Conn.) went 2-for-5 with a homerun and double, two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Dave Brizzolara (Norwood, N.J.) also went yard, finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs score and two driven in.
Senior Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y.) picked up the win, going five and one-third innings giving up five runs, four earned, on 11 hits with five strikeouts. With the win, Kamintzky tied Tom Maisano for sixth on the career victories list with 14. He also tied Steve Becker for fifth on the career strikeouts list with 177. Freshman Mike Fournier (Fairfield, Conn.) earned his second save of the year by tossing one and two-third scoreless innings, not allowing a hit. He also struck out three batters with one walk.
Junior Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) opened the game by doubling to left center. DeSimone would come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Rudolph. The Dolphins answered in the bottom of the second inning putting up a five spot to gain a 5-1 advantage.
Fairfield came back in the top of the third inning as Rudolph smacked a three-run homer to pull the Stags within 5-4. Fairfield added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead. With no outs and runners on first and second, rookie David Dudish (Olney, Md.) scored on a fielding error by the Dolphins to tie the score. Sophomore Dave Jermine (North Haven, Conn.) would score one batter later to put the Stags ahead.
Fairfield added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run shot by Weiner. Brizzolara hit a two-run homerun of his own in the top of the eighth inning to increase the Fairfield lead to 10-5.
LeMoyne did not go away quietly scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a one-run game. Fournier was able to hold off the Dolphins in the bottom of the ninth setting them down in order.
Fairfield will host Stony Brook on April 3 at 3:30 p.m. before heading to Fordham on April 4 for a 4 p.m. start. The Stags resume MAAC play April 7 and April 9 hosting Saint Peter's.
