NEW YORK - Fordham University scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings, and received a 3-for-4 performance from Greg Smith, to defeat the Fairfield University baseball team at Jack Coffey Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The game was originally scheduled for March 11, but was postponed until this afternoon, due to poor field conditions.
Smith added an RBI single in the first inning off Fairfield (4-12-1, 2-4 MAAC) starter Pablo Tamayo (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) took the loss giving up four runs, while scattering only two hits, and four walks in one and a third innings pitched.
Reliever Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was touched for only one run on five hits, and two walks in six and a third innings of relief.
With the Rams (6-13) leading 2-0 in the top of the second inning, the Stags rallied for three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Sal Mancuso singled through the left side to leadoff the inning. After two strikeouts, and a hit batsman freshman John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) roped a double to left field to clear the bases. Fellow rookie Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) would drive home Scaife with an RBI single.
Fordham would add an insurance run in the bottom of the third inning, and would hold the Stags scoreless the rest of the way. Freshman righty Craig Tscheredniko would pick up the win for the Rams tossing five innings of seven hit ball, and striking out two Stags on the afternoon.
Fairfield returns to action on Thursday afternoon, when the University of Connecticut comes to Alumni Diamond. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
