JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Senior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) went 2-for-4 with a homerun and three runs batted in as the Fairfield University baseball team defeated Saint Peter's, 10-8 on Sunday at Jaroschak Field.

With the win, Fairfield (8-14, 4-2 MAAC) takes its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series of the season, as last weekend, the Stags, took two-of-three from LeMoyne.

The Stags took a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat, as senior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) singled to centerfield, knocking in senior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and Scaife. Then sophomore Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) doubled to left centerfield to bring in Arpino.

Saint Peter's (8-16, 3-3 MAAC) would get a run back in the bottom of the first as Dennis Alexander singled, and came home after Santo Maertz and Dave Lewandoski hit back-to-back singles.

In the second, Saint Peter's committed three errors which allowed Fairfield to score five runs on one hit. The lone Fairfield hit came off the bat of Scaife who knocked a three-run blast to score senior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) and Girolamo.

Saint Peter's got to within two runs, in the bottom of the ninth inning, but freshman Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) struck out the final two batters to end the game, and earn his third save of the season. Gallagher gave up only one hit in his one inning of work.

Girolamo had two base hits for the Stags and crossed the plate twice. Sophomore Tyler Birrittella (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) knocked in two runs, while going 1-for-3 at the plate.

Freshman Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) pitched five innings to get the win. Ciallella (3-1) gave up four runs and recorded two strikeouts.

Fairfield returns to action on Tuesday, as it begins a five-game home stand against Albany. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. The game will also be available on Fairfield's student station WVOF (88.5 FM). Those outside the listening area can log onto www.wvof.org.
