FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The University of Connecticut pounded out 14 hits, and scored five runs in two of the last three innings to beat the Fairfield University baseball team 13-8 in seven innings on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The game was called after seven innings due to darkness.
Both teams would pound out 26 hits (14 UConn., 12 Fairfield), and would combine for 22 runs on the afternoon.
UConn. (14-8) broke the ice with three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Stags (4-13-1, 2-4 MAAC) came back to score five times in the bottom of the second inning, with a 3 RBI double from backup catcher freshman Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian). Sophomore Greg Batista (Syosset, NY/Syosset) would knock a two RBI double to left center field to give Fairfield a 5-3 lead.
But, the Huskies would score five runs of their own in the top of the third inning, to take an 8-3 lead. Fairfield would add a run in the bottom of the third, and two more in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead.
However, the Huskies would score a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, and three in the top of the seventh to come away with the wild win.
Tim Dempsey would come off the bench to lead the Huskies at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a homerun and three runs batted in. He would also score two runs. Peter Soteropoulos would add a 2-for-4 performance with three runs scored.
Fairfield was led by Batista would hit 2-for-3 on the afternoon with two runs batted in and a run scored. Junior Sal Mancuso (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) would hit 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Fairfield returns to action with a weekend Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) road series at Canisius.
