FAIRFIELD, Conn. - On a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon, the Fairfield University baseball team, kept the bats hot, beating Saint Peter's, 29-10 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game at Alumni Diamond.
Sunday's game was supposed to be a doubleheader, in a make-up from Saturday's wash out. But the teams were only able to get the one game in on Sunday. The teams will attempt to play a double-dip on Monday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
The Stags (3-14, 1-3 MAAC) pounded out 27 hits on the cold and grey afternoon. Saint Peter's had 14 hits.
Saint Peter's started the day off, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, but Fairfield pushed across six in the home half of the first inning. Saint Peter's would add two in the second inning, but Fairfield crossed the plate three times in the home half of the second.
In the bottom of the third, after Saint Peter's push a run across in the visitor's half, the Stags scored nine runs off five hits, and four Saint Peter's errors. Fairfield kept the hit parade going in the bottom of the fourth, crossing the plate five times on four hits.
Eight of the nine starters had multiple-hit afternoons for the Stags, led by catcher Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) who went 5-for-6 with a homerun, five runs batted in and four runs scored.
Freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) went 4-for-6 with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Junior John Sciafe (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) was 2-for-3 with six runs batted in and two runs scored.
Junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) went 4-for-6, extending his personal hitting streak to six games, with three RBI, and four runs scored.
Junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) was 3-for-7 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Rudolph has now hit safely in each of the last eight games, to raise his batting average to a team-best .371.
Sophomore Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./St. Joseph's) extended his hitting streak to six games, by colleting a pair of hits, two runs batted in and four runs scored.
Sophomore Michael Colucci (Pelhem, N.Y./St. Peter's Prep) pitched six and a third innings of relief to collect his second win of the season. He gave up four runs, three earned on seven hits, and one walk. Colucci (2-0) also struck out three hitters for the win.
The teams will return to action tomorrow afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The first game of the double-header will be the second-game of the series, and will be seven innings. The nightcap will be the third game, and will be nine innings.
First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
