Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sophomore Dave Jermine (North Haven, Conn.) delivered a decisive two-run triple while sophomore Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) had solid day on the mound to help lift the Fairfield baseball team to a 4-2 victory against Stony Brook this afternoon at Alumni Diamond.

Jermine's only hit of the day was his triple in the bottom of the fifth inning that proved to be the game-winning stroke. Jermine also walked and stole a base. Ciallella (1-1) pitched seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just one unearned run on seven hits with a strikeout. Senior Michael Colucci (Bayonne, N.J.) picked up his second save of the year, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout in an inning and a third of work.

Fairfield (6-12) pounded out 11 hits on the day with three Stags notching multi-hit days. Sophomore Dave Brizzolara (Norwood, N.J.) continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-3 on the day with a run scored. Junior Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored along with two stolen bases.

After two scoreless innings, Stony Brook (7-12) got on the board in the top of the third inning as Keith Feir came around to score on a single to centerfield by Chris Sipp to take a 1-0 advantage.

Fairfield took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting three runs on the board. Rookie David Dudish (Olney, Md.) led off the frame with a double to left center and advanced to third on a Brizzolara single through the left side. Dudish then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Philip Espinosa (Commack, N.Y.). With two on and two outs, Jermine stepped to the plate and corked a triple to right field to put the Stags on top, 3-1.

The Stags added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Brizzolara scored on a single by DeSimone. The Seawolves would score in the top of the ninth on a single by Chris Maier, but the rally fell short.

The victory was Fairfield's first against Stony Brook in five chances.

Weather permitting, Fairfield is back in action tomorrow, April 4, at Fordham at 4 p.m. The Stags resume Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play April 7 and April 9 hosting Saint Peter's.
