FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Behind two strong pitching performances, the Fairfield University baseball team swept Saint Peter's College, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. Senior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) pitched seven innings in the first game, as the Stags defeated the Peacocks, 12-1, and sophomore Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) pitched a complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
The teams were forced to play a doubleheader this afternoon, due to the wet weather, which affected the Southwestern Connecticut, for most of this weekend.
Kamintzky (1-3) was the story of the second game of the afternoon, as he allowed only four hits, while tying a season-high for strikeouts with eight.
He was only in trouble once, in the first inning, where he gave up hits to Wayne Guarino and Santo Maertz. They would get into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt from Rob Scordato, but Kamintzky was able to strikeout the side to get out of the jam. He retired 12 in a row at one point, and 22-of-23 Saint Peter's hitters.
Fairfield (5-14, 3-3 MAAC) loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning, but was only able to get one run on the board, after junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) came home on a wild pitch.
Saint Peter's also received a solid pitching performance from Maertz who pitched four innings before leaving, giving up one run on four hits and four walks Maertz struck out four.
The Stags got back on the board in the fifth inning, when junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) smacked a two-RBI single to centerfield, driving in Girolamo and sophomore Brian Schappert (Wycoff, N.J./St. Joseph's).
Fairfield put two more on the board in the sixth inning, when junior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) ripped a two-run single.
Scaife was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, in the second game. For the afternoon, he was 4-for-7 with four runs batted in, and a run scored.
In the first game of the afternoon, Dugan picked up a complete-game, seven-inning victory allowing only one unearned run on five hits, and two walks. Dugan (2-2) struck out five batters, while tossing 112 pitches, of which 76 were for strikes.
Saint Peter's (1-17, 0-5 MAAC) scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, off an error, but Fairfield crossed the plate three times in the home half of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) reached base on an error to lead the second inning for the Stags (5-14, 3-3 MAAC), and would score Fairfield's first run off an RBI ground out by freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City). Arpino scored the Stags next run, off a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Girolamo brought in senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) with a sacrifice-fly.
Arpino who went 5-for-6 with five runs batted in and four runs scored in Sunday's, 29-10 win by the Stags, continued his hot hitting going 3-for-4 in the first game of the twin bill. He also drove in a run in the third inning with a single, brining in freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic).
Scaife continued to swing a hot bat, as he had a two-RBI single to right, as part of a three-run fourth for the Stags. Scaife finished the first game of the afternoon, batting 2-for-4, and two runs batted in. Yesterday he knocked in six runs batted in. Junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) scored the third run of the inning, when Rudolph hit into a fielder's choice.
While the Stags bats were hot, Dugan kept the Saint Peter's bats quiet, retiring 11 in a row, before Chris Jodice singled in the top of the seventh inning.
Fairfield would score five runs in the sixth inning off of four hits, and two Saint Peter's errors.
Fairfield returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, when it travels to the University of Hartford for a 3 p.m. first pitch. Fairfield is back at Alumni Diamond on Wednesday, when the University at Albany pays a visit to the North Benson Road campus.
