FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Senior Andy Lynn (Montville, N.J./Delbarton) was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two runs batted in, to help lead the Fairfield University baseball team to a 12-10 victory over Hartford on a windy Tuesday afternoon, at Alumni Diamond.
With the win the Stags improve to 7-10 overall, and the Hawks fall to 5-12 on the season.
Four Fairfield players collected two or more hits on the afternoon, led by Lynn. Junior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Sophomore Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) went 2-for-4 with a run batted in, and two runs scored. Sophomore Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) wnet 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Stags went to work early in the game scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Lynn singled, and later stole second to start the Fairfield offense. After Anderson was hit by a pitch, senior Antuan Barnett (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) smacked a double to right center to clear the bases. Soucy was the next batter, and he laced a single to plate Barnett. Then Anderson came home on a wild pitch.
After a homerun in the top of the second inning for Hartford, the Stags added a pair of runs in the home half of the inning with a RBI ground out by sophomore John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia), and a run scoring single by Soucy.
Hartford added a run in the top of the third, then two runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to tie the ballgame, but Fairfield posted four runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a RBI single by Lynn, and two bases loaded walks by the Hartford pitcher. In the sixth the Stags added another run thanks to a bunt single by Lynn, to bring home Girolamo who was breaking from third.
In the top of the seventh the Hawks added a run thanks to a sacrifice fly, but the Stags got it back in the bottom of the inning, when Scaife reached on an error by the first baseman and Anderson scored on the play.
In the top of the eighth Hartford added a pair of runs with a two RBI single by Ron Acabbo. In the ninth the Hawks added a run, and had the bases loaded, but senior Pat Quinn (Paterson, N.J./Passic Valley) forced Luke Trahan to ground out into a game-ending double play.
Freshman Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) picked up his second win of the season, pitching three and a third innings of work, giving up three runs on three hits, and striking out three Hawks. Quinn earned his first save of the season, hurling one and a third innings.
Fairfield is back at Alumni Diamond on Thursday afternoon to host Rider University in the first of a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series with the Broncs. The series will conclude on Saturday afternoon, with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
