FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The University at Albany scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning, and was able to keep the Fairfield University baseball team off the board in the bottom of the ninth, despite the Stags loading the bases, as it beat the Stags 9-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Diamond.
With Albany (7-6) leading, 5-0, the Stags (5-16) scored four times in the bottom of the fourth inning, including two off the bat of junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia), who smacked his third home run of the season with a two-run shot to right field, junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) led the inning off with a walk.
Later on in the bottom of the fourth, freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) ripped an RBI single to drive in freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) who was hit by a pitch.
Then junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) lined a single to right field, to plate junior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) who walked.
Fairfield was able to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Rudolph scored on a wild pitch. He reached base the hard way, by getting hit by a pitch.
But, Albany came to the plate in the top of the eighth, and scored four runs on four hits to take a 9-5 lead. The Great Danes scored their first run on a wild pitch, then Rashad Barksdale had an RBI single, followed by an RBI single to left by Steve Sayre, and they would add another run off an error.
Fairfield scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, as Scaife drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded to make it 9-6 Albany. Raymond scored Fairfield's sixth run after singling up the middle.
The Stags had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth, as Raymond reached on an infield single, then senior Mark Geanuleas (Glenside, Pa./Academy of the New Church) was hit by a pitch. Senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) drew a pinch-hit walk to load the bases.
But, Albany's Shawn Ryan was able to get a strikeout for the final out of the game. Giorgio Fuda picked up the win for Albany, as he pitched one inning of relief, giving up one run on one hit and two walks, Ryan picked up the save, which was his fourth of the season.
The Stags were led by Raymond, who went 5-for-5 with one run scored and a run batted in. Scaife was 2-for-3 with the homerun, a double, and three RBI. The double was the eighth of the season for the Ansonia, Conn., native.
Fairfield returns to action this weekend with a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series at Le Moyne College.
